Coronation Street actor Marc Anwar has been fired with immediate effect.
According to reports, the 45-year-old sent a number of racist tweets directed at Indian people.
It’s believed that the tweets were posted on Friday night and reportedly insinuated that Indians should not be allowed work in England with a number of foul-mouthed slurs directed at the Indian community.
He branded Indians “b*****ds” and “p**s-drinking c**ts”.
Pakistan native Anwar has since been sacked from the soap with ITV issuing the below statement to The Sunday Mirror.
“We are deeply shocked by the entirely unacceptable, racially offensive comments made on Twitter by Marc Anwar.
“We have talked to Marc and, as a consequence of his comments, he will not be returning to Coronation Street with immediate effect”.
Anwar’s character, Sharif Nazar, is in the middle of a storyline at the moment and scriptwriters are working to write him out of the show.
A Corrie insider told the publication:
“Sharif’s storyline is at a particularly pivotal moment right now. He’s a few months ahead but it’s still going to be a headache for bosses to write him out now he’s gone for good.
That said, the show does not tolerate racism, whatever the context.”
