It always takes a fantastic goal to earn goal of the season honours in the Champions League, but this season the bar has already been set very high.
After Cristiano Ronaldo broke the hearts of Sporting Clube (or Sporting Lisbon as you might incorrectly call it) fans on Matchday one, his fantastic late free-kick has been surpassed by a much less household name.
If you don’t know about Thomas Delaney, that’s fine – we doubt you’re alone.
You probably didn’t know he’s Danish, for starters.
The FC København captain scored the pick of the goals in his team’s 4-0 demolition of Club Brugge, a result which gives the Danes a chance to overtake group leaders Leicester City with victory at the King Power Stadium next month.
No prizes for guessing it was this Thomas Delaney strike that got your vote. Any excuse to watch it again…🔥 #UCL https://t.co/21RJmBIMXt

This was a goal for which the phrase ‘stays hit’ was invented.
It’s just so aesthetically pleasing, far more so than should be the case with something which can be condensed down to ‘man kicks ball very hard’.
But that’s why we love football. Who would you rather have in your team? Tony Yeboah or Aliaksandr Hleb? Yeboah for us every time.
Yes, even now.
Oh, and to make things even better, it’s Delaney’s first ever goal in the Champions League proper. Too bad for København that he’s moving to the Bundesliga to play for Werder Bremen in January.
