Roy Keane ranks very low in vote for best Manchester United or Liverpool player since 1992

A Liverpool legend tops the poll...

Robert Redmond

This isn’t exactly the most scientific of polls, but we can’t help but feel Roy Keane should be ranked higher.

Sky Sports ran a vote to find the best player from Manchester United or Liverpool during the Premier League era, and the former United captain fails to make the top 10.

Steven Gerrard came out on top. The former Liverpool captain earned a whopping 49,000 votes, ahead of Luis Suarez is second place with 40,000 votes and Cristiano Ronaldo in third with 39,000 votes.

If you were being cynical, you could argue that the only thing the poll proves is that more Liverpool fans voted than those who support United. But, due to the high number of people who voted, it would also be unfair to completely dismiss the results.

Manchester United v Liverpool - Premier League

The top 10 is:

  1. Steven Gerrard – 49,000 votes.
  2. Luis Suarez – 40,000 votes.
  3. Cristiano Ronaldo – 39,000 votes.
  4. Paul Scholes – 36,000 votes.
  5. Ryan Giggs – 31,000 votes.
  6. Xabi Alonso – 29,000 votes.
  7. Eric Cantona – 27,000 votes.
  8. Fernando Torres – 27,000 votes.
  9. David Beckham – 26,000 votes.
  10. Robbie Fowler – 25,000 votes.

Keane comes in 12th position with 24,000 votes. However, it could be argued the most dominant midfielder of his generation in the Premier League warranted a place in the top 10 at least.

Wayne Rooney, who needs just one more goal to become the top scorer in away fixtures in Premier League history, scored the winner in this fixture last season, but ranks in 25th out of 50 places in the poll with 17,000 votes.

The current Rooney, who is warming the bench for United and England, couldn’t be considered amongst the best players to have featured in the fixture during the Premier League era, but his displays over 12 years surely deserve a higher ranking.
