The centre-back put in a vintage performance.

Liverpool have won eight and drawn two of their last ten games…

At the time of writing, Jurgen Klopp’s men sit third in the Premier League table — some improvement on last season’s eighth place.

However, Liverpool fans were given a stark reminder this afternoon that their side remain more-than-frail at the back, in the form of a Dejan Lovren howler.

The Croatian centre-half has blown hot and cold since his big money move to Merseyside from Southampton, and today’s first-half against Crystal Palace has summed him up. At first he gifted James McArthur a goal after slicing the ball into the air under no pressure, allowing the Scot to level the score at 1-1.

Then just three minutes later the defender grabbed his second goal of the season, nodding past Mandanda from a set-piece to restore Liverpool’s one goal lead. Peak Dejan Lovren.

McArthur equalised for a second time before the break – this time beating Lovren in the air – before Joel Matip restored the visitors’ lead before half-time.

Roberto Firmino rounded off the scoring in the second half, though Liverpool had a couple of scares as referee Andre Marriner turned down more than one penalty appeal from the hosts.

Ultimately the Reds held on for victory, though, with the three points leaving them level with Manchester City and Arsenal at the top of the Premier League table.
