This sublime goal from Spain will bring Arsenal fans out in cold sweats

A hell of a coincidence...

Simon Lloyd

If they’re old enough, Arsenal fans will vividly remember what happened to their team against Real Zaragoza in Paris’ Parc Des Princes in May 1995.

With seconds remaining of extra-time in the UEFA Cup Winners’ Cup Final, former Tottenham midfielder Nayim lobbed a ball goalwards from 40 yards. Despite David Seaman’s best efforts, he was powerless to stop it from dropping in his goal, sending Arsenal to defeat.

21 years on from beating the Gunners in the French capital, Zaragoza are playing their football in the second tier of Spanish football. On Saturday, they drew 2-2 away at Mallorca, with the pick of the goals this stunning halfway line lob from Juan Muñoz.

It wasn’t long before links were being made by the Spanish press between this goal and the one scored for the same team by Nayim all those years ago.

Strangely, the goal by Muñoz just so happened to be scored on Nayim’s 50th birthday.
