Gabby Petito went missing last September
Gabby Petito’s boyfriend confessed to her murder in a journal before taking his own life last year, the FBI has revealed.
The Gabby Petito case shocked the world last year after she went missing on a cross-country trip with her boyfriend Brian Laundrie. While the public was certain that Laundrie had killed his girlfriend, US police and the FBI struggled to put the pieces together for over a month.
But upon finding Laundrie’s body in Florida’s Myakkahatchee Creek Environmental Park in October, alongside a notebook, revolver and backpack, things became a lot clearer, reports Sky News.
In a statement, they said: “On October 21, 2021, a comparison of dental records confirmed that the human remains found at the T. Mabry Carlton, Jr. Memorial Reserve and Myakkahatchee Creek Environmental Park are those of Brian Laundrie.
“The FBI is grateful for the tremendous investigative support from our partners.”
On Friday, the FBI’s Denver Field Office released another statement regarding the belongings found near Laundrie’s body.
They said: “A review of the notebook revealed written statements by Laundrie claiming responsibility for Ms Petito’s death.”
The statement also detailed how both families had reached an agreement on how the belongings would be shared.
The FBI has not released the specifics of the notebook but has revealed they found texts between the couple sent after Petito had died.
The statement said: “The timing and content of these messages are indicative of Mr Laundrie attempting to deceive law enforcement by giving the impression that Ms Petito was still alive.”
