Just as we had finished rejoicing the last-minute plot twist that saved Brooklyn Nine-Nine…
ABC’s Designated Survivor, a show where Kiefer Sutherland ends up as the President of America after everyone else in the line of succession dies in an explosion, has not been renewed for a third season.
The show was popular in Ireland, with episodes of its second season currently being released week-by-week on Netflix. As it stands, the final episode of the show is set to be released on May 16 and will serve as the series finale. ABC has also cancelled its FBI drama Quantico.
The decision to cancel Designated Survivor follows this week’s drama, where Fox cancelled popular comedy Brooklyn Nine-Nine only for an online campaign and some divine intervention from NBC to save the day. Sadly, it doesn’t look like Designated Survivor will have the same happy ending.
The show has been beset by behind-the-scenes problems, having had four show-runners in its two-season run. It was confirmed that had the show been renewed for a third season, it would have been been made under a fifth show-runner.
Alas, Designated Survivor hasn’t made the cut after its ratings fell off in season two and — unlike its hero — it has not survived.
Fans of the show are unsurprisingly distressed by the news.
Love this cast, and all its fans.. Thanks for all the love these past 2 seasons.. I'll be live tweeting Wednesday night for our series finale.. ~MikeRitter #DesignatedSurvivor 👊🏾 https://t.co/7QDmbnpcAv
