Buffy The Vampire Slayer was one of the greatest TV shows of the 1990s
The show mixed up gothic horror with relatable teenage experiences, mixed up with Joss Whedon’s sassy dialogue (back when that wasn’t completely overplayed), delivered by a great cast.
Buffy ran for seven seasons and 144 episodes, and survived being cancelled once, and switching networks. It also spawned four seasons of spin-off Angel. Since it’ final episode in 2003, it has remained a beloved pop culture touchstone.
Various film and TV continuations have been rumoured, but nothing has come to pass. Until now.
The Hollywood Reporter reports that 20th Century Fox Television are rebooting the show.
Series creator Joss Whedon is on-board as a executive producer.
The show will be run by Monica Owusu-Breen, who worked as a writer alongside Whedon on Agents Of S.H.I.E.L.D.
Most interestingly, The Hollywood Reporter says the show with have a black actress in the lead – Buffy was of course played by Sarah Michelle Gellar in the original show. No actresses have been mentioned for the role so far though.
There’s no word yet on which network the show will air on yet, though 20th Century Fox Television are believed to be offering it to streaming services as well as traditional networks.
