Coronation Street legend denies they were sacked from the show for refusing storyline

She’s vehemently denied it is true.

Former Corrie actor Georgia May Foote has taken to Twitter to deny she was sacked from the show for refusing to take part in a storyline that would have seen her character convert to Islam.

The 27-year-old played Katy Armstrong for five years but left the show in 2014 – and was killed off away from the screen last year. She has now hit back at claims from her former co-star Marc Anwar that she declined to do the story, leading to her leaving the show.

“Again. Fake shit stories,” she tweeted today. “As an actress i would have jumped at the chance to play such a diverse storyline. This was not the reason behind me leaving the show i loved and cherished for 5 years.”

The claim was made by Marc, who played Sharif Nazir on the show. He said that Georgia’s character would have fallen in love with his onscreen grandson Zeedan and she would be asked to convert to his religion

“The storyline was that he would then ask her to become a Muslim,” Marc told the Sun.

“But when that was put to her she declined. I don’t know what her reasons were.”

“She was adamant she didn’t want to do that storyline. And so the response was, ‘OK, see you later.'”

At the time of her departure, a producer said that the decision to write out her character was ‘based on storyline discussions’.

“The decision to write out the character of Katy Armstrong is based on storyline discussions and will be one of the consequences of the current drama involving the Windass/Armstrong clan,” said producer Stuart Blackburn at the time.

“Katy will not be killed off and the door will be left open for a possible return. We wish Georgia every success with her future career.”
