The three-time Oscar winner’s representative says the actor is retiring.

The 60-year-old’s spokeswoman, Leslee Dart today confirmed the shocking news in a statement saying:

“Daniel Day-Lewis will no longer be working as an actor. He is immensely grateful to all of his collaborators and audiences over the may years.

“This is a private decision and neither he nor his representatives will make any further comment on this subject.”

Daniel Day-Lewis is regarded as one of the finest actors of his generation and the news of his retirement, as revealed by Variety, has come as a major shock.

Even more so as the Irish actor is awaiting the release of his latest film. The untitled drama is scheduled to be released in December this year and it is presumed that Day-Lewis will help promote the movie.

The actor has won three best actor Oscars, winning the top accolade for his roles in Lincoln, There Will Be Blood and My Left Foot.

The famously method actor briefly took a break from acting in the late 90s and reportedly worked as a cobbler before being convinced to return to the screen by none other than Martin Scorsese for Gangs of New York.
