Eminem calls Kendrick Lamar one of ‘top tier’ lyricists of all time

Steve Hopkins

Damn right!

Eminem has said that he thinks fellow rapper Kendrick Lamar is not only a “top tier lyricist” but one of the best ever.

Ahead of his performance at the Pepsi Super Bowl LVI Halftime Show on Sunday, The Real Slim Shady said Lamar, who is also due to perform, is not only among the best of his generation but “of all time”.

In 2018, Lamar was awarded the Pulitzer Prize for Music for his 2017 album DAMN. It was the first time the award had gone to a musical work outside the genres of classic music and jazz.

Eminem made the complimentary comments during an interview with Sway Calloway on SiriusXM’s Shade 45, which you can watch below.

Eminem also admitted during the interview that he was nervous about performing at the Super Bowl, in what is a star-studded line-up.

He told Sway: “It’s fucking nerve-racking. This is like to me, there’s nothing more final than live TV. You know what I’m saying? So, if you fuck up, your fuck up is there forever.”

In addition to Eminem and Kendrick, the halftime Show will see also feature Dr Dre, Snoop Dogg, and Mary J. Blige.

Eminem also opened up about Dr Dre’s vision for the show. “When Dre first asked, when the whole thing started going down and we were like, ‘ok, this might be actually serious.’ I was trying to envision what Dre might do,” Eminem said.

“I was thinking like, ‘yeah, it’s dope that all of us are gonna rap together.’ […] I didn’t expect it to be, like the production to be like this.”

Dr Dre recently shared a video of a young Eminem, saying no one could beat him.
