Adam Sandler reignites feud between Happy Gilmore and Shooter McGavin 25 years on

Wil Jones

Happy Gilmore is 25 years old this week

Adam Sandler has gone through somewhat of a renaissance recently. His performance in the brilliant Uncut Gems got him his best reviews since Punch Drunk Love, and even his most recent Netflix comedy Hubie Halloween was warmly received as a throwback to his 1990s films.

But for many, Sandler’s best will always be his early comedies: The Waterboy, Billy Madison, Big Daddy

And if you are one of those people, here is something to make you feel old. Happy Gilmore came out 25 years ago this week.

To mark this hallowed anniversary, Adam Sandler himself shared a video of himself showing he can still do the Happy Gilmore drive.

“Okay, it’s been 25 years since I’ve done this. Let’s see what happens. I’m scared,” says Sandler, adding “Shooter McGavin, this is for you,” in reference to the film’s antagonist.

After taking the shot, he then exclaims: “I’m not lying to you — that is smashed, smashed! That went pretty well. You’re dead, Shooter.”

And because everything on Twitter is now meta, Shooter McGavin actually replied – or at least Christopher McDonald, the actor who played him did.

“Nice drive Gilmore. 25 years, huh? Let’s see if it’s Shooter’s tour. Check it out,” says McDonald in a video of him taking a put in his living room, cooly sinking a golf ball into a glass in front of his fireplace.

“Money. Shooter’s still got it. Well thank you to all the fans, and thank you to you, Adam Sandler,” McDonald continues.

“And why don’t you just meet me at the ninth green at nine, Gilmore? Little secret of the pros, ok? And Gilmore, wear something nice. 25th anniversary, baby. Shooter, out.”
