You know Avatar, right? That film with the blue fellas running around the jungle doing stuff
It was quite a big deal. A $2.8 billion box office takings kinda deal. A nine Academy Award nominations kinda deal. A four-part sequel kinda deal.
Since the movie was released in 2009, writer, director and producer James Cameron has essentially devoted his life to working on the sequels.
“I’m not interested in developing anything. I’m in the Avatar business. Period,” Cameron told The New York Times. “I’m making “Avatar 2,” “Avatar 3,” maybe “Avatar 4,” and I’m not going to produce other people’s movies for them. I’m not interested in taking scripts.”
That’s that then.
Aside from Cameron throwing himself completely into the world of Avatar, we’ve heard very little about what’s happening with the sequels. However, BBC News claim to have seen “documentation” regarding the future of Avatar. The plans single out four projects, which the BBC suggests are the names of the sequels.
Those projects are…
Avatar: The Way of Water
Avatar: The Seed Bearer
Avatar: The Tulkun Rider
Avatar: The Quest for Eywa
There’s a good bet to be had on the second Avatar film being Avatar: The Way of Water. Cameron has already said that the next film would take us beneath the waves of Pandora, the planet on which Avatar is set.
The director has also outlined some ambitious plans to use motion capture technology underwater. This has never been achieved before, hence why we’ve not seen or heard much about the project in nine years.
As for the rest of them, who knows? Eywa is the mystical Force-like energy that connects all beings on Pandora, so there will be probably be some kind of quest for that at some point. The Seed Bearer sounds… obstetrical. If not a little pornographic. As does The Tulkun Rider, actually.
Avatar 2, or Avatar: The Way of Water, if that’s what it turns out to be, is slated for release on December 18, 2020.
