Extras banged on the doors to be released
The Joaquin Phoenix-starring Joker movie is currently in the middle of production. Official images of Phoenix in costume have been released – but several sneaky set pics and videos have also leaked.
Most of the footage we’ve seen so far have had the Joker causing havoc in a subway station. Phoenix is seen walking in full costume, while chaos reigns around him. Henchman also in clown make up run riot, as innocent bystanders flee the subway trains.
Stories emerging from the set in Brooklyn however suggest that the atmosphere is far from perfect.
Variety and TMZ have reported that extras on the movie were locked in subway cars for over three hours. They were in there so long that some of them eventually had to urinate onto the tracks.
According to the reports, the extras were denied their break after working for two hours, and banged on the doors to be let out.
One of them made a complaint to union SAG-AFTRA. The union made no official comment, but a Variety source says a representative visited the set and resolved the situation.
Warner Bros confirmed to TMZ that they were looking into the incident.
Joker stars Joaquin Phoenix as Batman’s greatest villain, though it seems like Bats himself won’t be in the movie – instead it will provide a possible origin story for the Clown Prince of Crime, set in the 1980s.
It is directed by Todd Phillips – of The Hangover fame – and Martin Scorsese was initially involved as producer, though he later dropped out. Joining Phoenix in the stacked cast are Robert De Niro, Zazie Beats, and Marc Maron.
De Niro is set to play a talk show host, and Beats as Pheonix’s love interest.
Brett Cullen has also been cast as Thomas Wayne – the father of Bruce Wayne, and an important figure in Gotham City.
