The film is set to hit cinemas next April
The first full trailer for Fantastic Beasts: The Secrets of Dumbledore has been released, giving fans their first view of Mads Mikkelsen as the new face of wizard villain Gellert Grindelwald.
Eddie Redmayne and Jude Law will once again star as Newt Scamander and Albus Dumbledore respectively but this will be the first film in the series with Mikkelsen as Grindelwald, after the actor replaced Johnny Depp as the character following his appearances in the first two movies.
Depp was dropped from the franchise in late 2020 in the aftermath of his high-profile libel case against The Sun over allegations of domestic abuse towards his ex-wife Amber Heard.
Mikkelsen was announced as Depp’s replacement less than three weeks later.
Secrets of Dumbledore is the third instalment in the Fantastic Beasts franchise and is set to be released on April 5, 2022.
Fantastic Beasts: The Secrets of Dumbledore is directed by David Yates, who directed the final four films in the Harry Potter series and all of the Fantastic Beasts films so far.
The Secrets of Dumbledore is written by author J.K. Rowling and screenwriter Steve Kloves, who wrote seven of the eight Harry Potter films and makes his Fantastic Beasts debut with this instalment.
Two more films are scheduled to come after The Secrets of Dumbledore.
As you might imagine at this early stage, the film’s synopsis is pretty vague and reads: “Professor Albus Dumbledore (Jude Law) knows the powerful Dark wizard Gellert Grindelwald (Mads Mikkelsen) is moving to seize control of the wizarding world.
“Unable to stop him alone, he entrusts Magizoologist Newt Scamander (Eddie Redmayne) to lead an intrepid team of wizards, witches and one brave Muggle baker on a dangerous mission, where they encounter old and new beasts and clash with Grindelwald’s growing legion of followers.
“But with the stakes so high, how long can Dumbledore remain on the sidelines?”
