Let’s hope it is more like Snatch and Lock, Stock than Revolver
Aubrey Plaza has joined the cast of Guy Ritchie’s new spy film that will also star Jason Statham, Deadline reports.
The as-yet-untitled thriller will be the first time Guy Ritchie and Jason Statham have worked together for over 15 years. The duo came to fame together, with Statham appearing in Ritchie’s debut Lock, Stock and Two Smoking Barrels in 1998, and then taking a bigger role in his follow-up Snatch in 2000.
Many would argue those films are still the best thing either of them has ever done, so the idea of them reuniting seems very exciting. However, we should probably point out that their last collaboration to date was 2005’s Revolver – a near-incomprehensible movie that is only rated 15% on Rotten Tomatoes. Fingers crossed that their new project comes out better than that.
The currently-untitled film, which previously went under the name Five Eyes, will have a screenplay by Ivan Atkinson and Marn Davies, who wrote Ritchie’s most recent movie The Gentlemen. Ritchie will also be producing, as well as adding revisions to the script.
According to Deadline, Statham will star as a MI6 agent who is “recruited by a global intelligence alliance to track down and stop the sale of a deadly new weapons technology that threatens to disrupt the world order. Reluctantly paired with CIA high-tech expert, [he] sets off on a globe-trotting mission where he will have to use all of his charm, ingenuity and stealth to track down and infiltrate billionaire arms broker.”
Aubrey Plaza is, of course, best known for playing April Ludgate in Parks and Recreation, but has also appeared in films including Scott Pilgrim, Monsters University and Funny People. There is no word on what character she will play yet.
This won’t be Guy Ritchie’s first spy movie – he also made 2015 underrated The Man From U.N.C.L.E. starring Henry Cavill and Armie Hammer, which is actually really fun and definitely worth watching if you skipped it.
