Darker and grittier than before.
You have to love any film that decided to have its finale in Ireland but despite the fact that Hellboy has already been adapted into two feature films—Hellboy (2004) and Hellboy II: The Golden Army (2008) — both starring Ron Perlman with Guillermo del Toro at the helm – it’s time for the reboot.
Thankfully, Neil Marshall is the man responsible for this version and his CV gives us hope. Aside from directing Dog Soldiers and Centurion, he’s also the man responsible for two of the finest episodes in Game of Thrones history – ‘Blackwater’ and ‘Watchers on the Wall’.
We’re expecting blood and the first trailer didn’t disappoint.
As you may know, Perlman isn’t wielding the apocalyptic hand because there’s a new man playing ‘Big Red.’ Mr. David Harbour (Stranger Things), step right up!
As for the plot, Hellboy is working alongside Bruttenholm (Ian McShane, American Gods) at the B.P.R.D alongside Major Ben Daimio (Daniel Dae Kim, Lost).
The biggest deal here though is that Laila Morse, brother of Gary Oldman and Big Mo from Eastenders, is in her, firing a big machine gun. You might have won an Oscar, Mr del Toro, but your Hellboy never had this.
Based on the graphic novels by Mike Mignola, Hellboy is caught between the worlds of the supernatural and human. Ultimately, he’s forced to battle an ancient sorceress (Milla Jovovich) bent on revenge.
If it can match the del Toro films in terms of style and wit, we’re very optimistic about this one.
Here’s the trailer:
Hellboy is out on April 12th, 2019.
