People die on Game of Thrones a lot
From the very start of Game of Thrones we have been treated to a whole series of important characters being killed.
By the way, there are obviously spoilers here – the headline literally mentions a dead character – so don’t go getting annoyed at us for having the show spoiled for you.
In the final season of Game of Thrones we didn’t see quite as many important character deaths as we’d hoped, at least not initially. Usually the deaths are spread out and, apart from the deaths of Jorah Mormont, Lyanna Mormont and The Night King, the first three episodes was casualty free to an extent.
In the final three episodes things kicked up a notch and we saw Missandei, Varys, Euron Greyjoy, Qyburn, the Hound, the Mountain, Jaime and Cersei Lannister, and Daenerys Targaryen all die at the hands of swords, boulders and fire.
One character who appeared to emerge unscathed from the proceedings was Grey Worm, the lead commander of the Unsullied and very briefly Dany’s Master of War.
Dany died though and, after some buttering up from the lords and ladies of Westeros, Grey Worm and the rest of the Unsullied fucked off to the island of Naath, where his beloved Missandei (RIP) hailed from.
The assumption was that Grey Worm and the Unsullied went to Naath, took over the place (but definitely didn’t repopulate) and have a decent time spending their life on a beautiful island banging their spears against the ground until their dying days.
Except their dying days may have come much sooner, because while Naath is a stunning island in the Summer Sea with white beaches and palm trees, it also is home to deadly butterflies.
According to the website A Wiki of Ice and Fire, the Unsullied would likely have died from Butterly Fever, saying that “even though the Naathi themselves are immune to this sickness, all outsiders who remain too long on Naath fall prey to it”.
Thrones lore states that “the chances of dying of butterfly fever are low as long as they do not remain on the islands for more than a few hours”. For the Unsullied and for poor old Grey Worm, that wasn’t the plan, meaning that they are probably all dead.
RIP guys.
