Not nice, is it George, to develop a bond with someone only to have them snatched away from you? Huh?
You may have heard that Odell Beckham Jr, one of the most highly rated and outright coolest players in the NFL, has been traded from the New York Giants to the Cleveland Browns. It’s a move that shocked almost everyone, particularly Giants fans, who seem to be rather upset about it.
In exchange for ‘OBJ’, the Giants will receive two draft picks and Jabrill Peppers.
One of those infuriated Giants fans happens to be George R.R. Martin, author of A Song of Ice and Fire and the genius behind TV hit Game of Thrones (returning to screens this April).
In a blog post which he has given the calm and measured title of ‘Kill me now’, Martin has penned a series of very angry thoughts about the decision to trade OBJ, claiming he is one of the best players the Giants have ever had.
After listing a series of other poor trades the Giants have made, he describes OBJ as ‘Their best wideout, and one of the very best in the NFL’.
“I’ve been watching and rooting for the G-Men since “the Greatest Game Ever Played” in 1958,” Martin explains.
“Beckham was not only the best receiver on today’s Giants, but he was the best receiver this storied NFL franchise has EVER had in their long history, and probably the best receiver they will ever have. They are certainly not going to replace him with the 17th overall pick in the forthcoming draft.”
He goes on to express sympathy for whoever replaces legendary quarter-back Eli Manning, saying: “Some of the talking heads on ESPN are suggesting the Giants might package the 6th and 17th first round picks to move up a few slots and take a QB to replace Eli Manning. If they do, I feel sorry for that quarterback. He’ll be playing for an awful team.”
As sports fans, we can all sympathise with Martin’s anger. Whether you’re a United fan, a Liverpool fan, or support your local team, we’ve all felt the grief of losing a key player. But there is a sense of Martin getting a taste of his own medicine, isn’t there? Given that he’s killed off countless beloved characters on Game of Thrones.
