Here’s your first look at Jake Gyllenhaal as the new Spider-Man villain

Our spidey-sense is tingling

In terms of very welcome surprises, Peter Parker’s first standalone foray into the MCU, Spider-Man: Homecoming, was a bloody great film that solidified the promise that Tom Holland showed in the role during Captain America: Civil War.

Funny, action-packed and full of heart, Jon Watts’ take on the character allayed any fears that there might be a ‘Spider-Man overload’ following Sam Raimi and Marc Webb’s five – count them – five films in the space of 12 years.

As stated previously, the web-slinger is moving into new terrain in his next film, Spider-Man: Far From Home, and shortly before Avengers: Infinity War was released, Kevin Feige, President of Marvel, said that the new film was going to be set in London.

“We start filming early July. We film in London. We shot the first film in Atlanta. And we shoot a lot of films in London but there’s another reason we’re shooting in London which is, yes, Spidey, of course, will spend some time in New York, but he’ll spend some time in other parts of the globe,” he said.

Aside from this, there have been rumours circulating that Jake Gyllenhaal will be starring as the new villain, Mysterio.

Granted, this hasn’t yet been confirmed by Sony and Marvel yet, but it appears that the cat is out of the bag.

With regards to the villain, the first and most high-profile incarnation of Mysterio is Quentin Beck, although several other characters have since used the Mysterio alias.

In terms of his powers, Quentin Beck does not possess superhuman abilities but he is an expert designer of special effects devices and stage illusions, a master hypnotist, magician and an amateur chemist and roboticist.

In terms of casting, Gyllenhaal is a perfect choice because if you’ve ever seen Nightcrawler, you’ll know that he has an ability to create a character that can really get under your skin. Aside from this, his turns in films like Donnie Darko, Prisoners and Zodiac have demonstrated his skill in dealing with roles that delve into some ‘darker aspects’ of humanity.

Truth be told, after Michael Keaton’s memorable take as The Vulture, he has the potential to raise the bar even further and our spidey-sense is tingling at the thought of it.

Spider-Man: Far From Home hits theatres July 5, 2019.
