‘This shot is a farewell, a send-off on our own terms’
The creators of Ice Age have brought an end to one of the cinema’s great storylines – with Scrat finally having his acorn and eating it.
If you’ve seen any of the Ice Age films, then you’ll know exactly the saga we’re talking about. And if you haven’t seen any of the Ice Age films then what on earth have you been doing all your life?
Throughout the films we see Scrat and his struggles to finally get hold of his acorn, often resulting in catastrophe.
But, animation studio Blue Sky Studios have finally given the poor sabre-toothed squirrel some peace, posting a video to social media of Scrat eating up his acorn.
In the final days of @BlueSkyStudios, a small team of artists came together to do one final shot. This shot is a farewell, a send-off on our own terms —— Blue Sky Studios 🌰#IceAge #IceAgeScratTaleshttps://t.co/CA3klgo98x pic.twitter.com/tkcXwyLcMS

Many people took to the comments to voice how weirdly emotional they found the clip, with the animation studio having shut down for good last April because of the pandemic.
One person wrote: “What really hits hard is how quickly and casually it is. There’s no celebration, no joke not even a burp gag, no exaggerated sense of great achievement. He just achieves his goal in seconds. And then, he moves on.”
Another said: “What a fitting end for their last production as a studio. Scrat finally eats his acorn.”
A third thanked the studio, saying that the Ice Age movies were “a lovely part of our childhood.”

Uploading the final clip of Scrat to YouTube, the studio explained that “in the final days of Blue Sky Studios a small team of artists came together to do one final shot.”
They described the shot as “a farewell, a send-off on our own terms.”
In a statement following the news that the studio was shutting down, co-founder Chris Wedge revealed that the little squirrel had become their mascot over the years.
He wrote: “For the past thirty-four years, we, like our single minded character Scrat, have reached for something that at times seems unattainable. Yet time after time we’ve managed to get our arms around our own versions of that elusive acorn.
“Unfortunately, it’s not possible to hold onto anything forever.
“We’ve had more fun bringing our movies to life than anyone should be allowed. We hope you’ve been able to feel some of that joy. Thank you, from the bottom of our collective Blue Sky hearts, for being with us all these years.”

No, thank you Blue Sky Studios.
Along with the iconic Ice Age films, they also created Rio, Rio 2, The Peanuts Movie, and Robots.
Their last film Nimona was cancelled following the studio’s closure, despite being almost finished. However, The Verge reports that it has since been picked up by Netflix for a 2023 release.
