Marvel announce plans to introduce the first Muslim superhero to the MCU

Paul Moore

After Infinity War, this makes perfect sense.

As always, if you’re the only person in the world that’s yet to see Infinity War, consider this to be your spoiler alert warning.

Now, if only there was a scene that combines action with a genuine laugh out loud moment to distract you about this spoiler alert.

Oh yeah…

I am Groot.

Granted, we would give anything to see Groot get his own spinoff- the script writes itself – but during an interview with the BBC, Kevin Feige revealed that a film with the Muslim teen superhero Kamala Khan is “definitely sort of in the works”.

As comic book fans will know, Khan is better known as Ms Marvel.

At the present time in the MCU, we know that the following films are coming; Ant-Man and the Wasp, Captain Marvel, Avengers 4, Guardians of the Galaxy: Volume 3 and a sequel to Spider-Man: Homecoming.

Given the events that transpired in Avengers: Infinity War, it makes perfect sense for Disney/Marvel to withhold what’s coming next after those titles, but it’s looking increasingly likely that Captain Marvel is going to reset their cinematic slate.

The MCU might also need a few more heroes  after Thanos’ fatal click of his fingers.

We’ve already discussed the impact that Captain Marvel could have in the MCU – we’re also hoping for an appearance from Adam Warlock- and Disney have recently said that they’re pushing ahead with plans to introduce new characters and franchises into the MCU.

Disney CEO Robert Iger told investors (via Entertainment Weekly) that: “We meet on a regular basis with our Marvel team, and we’ve plotted out Marvel movies that will take us well into the next decade. I’m guessing we will try our hand at what I’ll call a new franchise beyond Avengers, but that doesn’t necessarily mean you won’t see more Avengers down the road.”

“Given the popularity of the characters and given the popularity of the franchise, I don’t think people should conclude there will never be another Avengers movie.”

It’s clear that Ms Marvel is one of those films that’s on their agenda.

Regarding Ms Marvel and her powers, Khan is a teenage Pakistan-American from Jersey City, New Jersey with shapeshifting abilities, who discovers that she has Inhuman genes in the aftermath of the “Inhumanity” storyline and assumes the mantle of Ms. Marvel from her idol Carol Danvers after Danvers becomes Captain Marvel.

Hopefully, the success of films like Black Panther and Wonder Woman has shown Hollywood that it’s ok to make blockbuster films that embrace diversity and ethnicity.

Here’s what Kevin Feige had to say.
