Twenty years ago today, one of the seminal rock n’ roll albums from a British band was released.
On October 2, 1995, I hopped on the bus and made the weekly pilgrimage to my local record shop to hand over my pocket money from collecting glasses at a holiday camp on a Saturday night in exchange for my copy of (What’s The Story) Morning Glory.
Just as Blur’s ‘The Great Escape’ (bought exactly a month before) was getting a bit knackered, along came ‘What’s The Story’ to crank up loud when our parents went out and shout into your mates’ faces. Yes, I was a Blur fan too.
I revelled in the rivalry over the ‘best rock band in the land’ title until Noel Gallagher said he wished Damon Albarn ‘would get Aids and die’ – that was a bit much. Even though I observed and loved the turf-war, I didn’t want to pick sides, why would I? I was 13. I appreciated them both.
(What’s The Story) Morning Glory has since sold more than 22 million copies and although we pay tribute to every inch of the record, everyone has their favourites.
Here are my top five tracks. And yes, it isn’t a mistake, ‘Roll With It’ isn’t included.
