Squidward voice actor to reportedly introduce Maroon 5 Super Bowl halftime show

Wil Jones

A million people have signed a petition to get Spongebob SquarePants to perform at the Super Bowl

Rodger Bumpass, the voice actor behind SpongeBob SquarePant’s ill-tempered colleague Squidward, has reportedly confirmed that he will introduce Maroon 5 at Super Bowl LIII’s halftime show.

In a Facebook post, Bumpass is reported to have said: “To all SpongeBob fans!!! Tune into the Super Bowl because Squidward gets to introduce the halftime entertainment!!!”

However, as noted by CNET, Bumpass’ Facebook is private, so we cannot be sure if the post is genuine, and nothing has been officially confirmed yet.

It follows an online petition for SpongeBob SquarePants to play the song ‘Sweet Victory’ during this year’s halftime performance to honour the creator of the show, Stephen Hillenburg, who died last year.

The petition, started by Israel Colunga on Change.org, has over 1,181,000 signatures and counting. It reads:

Problem
As some of you may or may not know, Stephen Hillenburg—the creator of Spongebob Sqaurepants—has passed away recently. As a tribute to his legacy, his contributions to a generation of children, and to truly showcase the greatness of this song, we call for Sweet Victory to be performed at the Halftime Show.

Solution
Perform Sweet Victory at the Halftime Show

For those unaware of the song in question, ‘Sweet Victory’ is actually performed by SpongeBob, Patrick, Plankton and co. at halftime during the Bubble Bowl in the episode ‘Band Geeks’.

Stephen Hillenburg, who also voiced Potty the Parrot, passed away in November aged 57 following a long battle with amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS).
