(With apologies to Shaun Of The Dead for that headline)
Zombieland is such a great little film. The undead comedy came early in the 00s zombie revival, and brought a fresh and funny spin on the genre. Instead of being set during the outbreak like a lot of zombie films, it instead takes place long after society has broken down. A pre-The Social Network Jesse Einsenberg roams the United States and runs into Woody Harrelson, Emma Stone and Abigail Breslin, all of whom are far more competent at killing zombies than him, and hijinks quickly ensue.
It’s a knowing and clever film, and seemed to have the potential for follow-ups. A pilot was made by Amazon for TV series, but it was ultimately not picked up, and all the main roles were recast anyway.
But now a proper movie sequel is coming. Speaking to Vulture, original co-writer Paul Wernick confirmed that Zombieland 2 is on the way – with all the original cast coming back.
“We’re going on the tenth anniversary of Zombieland. Zombieland came out October of 2009. We don’t know what you get someone for their tenth anniversary, but it may be a Zombieland 2.”
“The hope is that we’re shooting that thing early 2019 for an October of ’19 release…with the original cast, by the way,”
In a previous interview in 2017 with Comicbook.com, he offered a few other tidbits, saying original director Reuben Fleischer was also signed on. He explained that it was the fact that the film boosted the careers of its young stars that was holding it back.
“They’ve all become superstars now. We made Zombieland with $20 million, so it’s trying to fit that financial model into the sequel model so it makes sense for the studio and being able to pay the actors what they now get paid and deserve to paid.
“We’re not letting it go. We really want to see Zombieland 2.”
But will Bill Murray be in it?
