It’s been stocked in Asda since October 19th
One of the UK’s favourite pork pie brands has released its first ever vegan pork pie, which features a plant-based filling made from pea protein.
Founded in 1931, Pork Farms’ vegan pork pie is its first meat alternative featuring plant-based protein at the basis of its recipe. Pea protein is a natural plant-based protein, filled with nutrients and amino acids.
Alongside the innovative meat alternative, the Porkless Pork Pie features Pork Farm’s mouth-watering hot water crust pastry and seasoning. The pie went on sale across the UK from Monday 19th October, and has been available in selected Asda stores.
This vegan pork pie, which has been developed by Addo Food Group, is made with pea protein, white pepper, ginger, onion powder, nutmeg and a blend of fresh herbs and spices including pimento, coriander, paprika and thyme.
Each 65g pork pie contains 3g of saturated fat, 0.69g of salt, 6.5g of protein and is 247 calories.
It retails in Asda stores for £1.25.
Mike Holton, brand manager at Pork Farms said: “We’re incredibly excited to be just one of only a few brands to introduce pea protein to our product range.
“Our innovation chefs have developed this recipe to emulate one of the nation’s favourite snacks and we are delighted to be providing an alternative to flexitarian customers, while also expanding our product range to appeal to vegan shoppers who are looking for more choice, who can now enjoy a pork pie with the same textures and flavours as our traditional snack.”
According to Pork Farms, cutting meat from the recipe shouldn’t mean taste goes with it too.
Holton added: “When it comes to plant-based food, consumers shouldn’t have to sacrifice great taste. We know how much the British public love pork pies and pea protein’s texture is paired perfectly with delicious flavours to give it an authentic taste.”
