The comedy industry favours middle-class performers

Comedy isn’t cheap

Out of all the people that try to make it as a professional comedian, the number that actually achieves that goal is relatively… well, tiny.

The reason for many of these people dropping out of comedy and pursuing a more straightforward life is that they simply aren’t funny enough. For many comedians though the heights that they can reach are limited by how much money they have.

Those who come from middle-class or wealthier families have – it goes without saying – an inherent advantage in comedy, just as they do in every other aspect of professional life.

This was something discussed by comedian Rob Mulholland when he spoke with JOE at the Edinburgh Fringe Festival 2019.
