JOE’s search for Britain’s Best Sandwich – Kappacasein, London

Tom Victor

While some purists might argue the best sandwich has to contain meat, there are some great vegetarian options out there too.

Following on from the first entry in our search for Britain’s best sandwich, we made the trip to London’s famous Borough Market for a cheese toastie that’s the stuff of legend.

There’s always a huge queue for Kappacasein, who marry cheese they’ve made themselves with leek, onion and garlic for a hangover-busting creation.

There was a moment of suspicion when the woman making my sandwich labelled the toastie before mine as “the best one I’ve ever made”, but there was no need to worry.

First of all, it proves that there’s no such thing as too much cheese. The mix of ogleshield, comte and cheddar oozes out of the sourdough bread, while the blend of onion, garlic and leeks is slotted in during the toasting process to combine perfectly with the melted cheese.

Oh, and if for some reason you don’t want a sandwich (it apparently happens sometimes) they also offer raclette – cheese melted over potatoes, gherkins and pickled onions. Tasty.
