Details have emerged of a detailed Facebook scam which has cost Brits significant amounts of money.
The scam is understood to involve the hacking of user accounts and also involves users’ mobile phone numbers, with the most recent case taking place this month.
Northumbria police have issued a warning, explaining how the scam works:
- Once the accounts are hacked, posts regarding money-making opportunities are posted on the user’s timelines.
- Friends of theirs often like the posts and get in touch about the advert.
- They then get a message from their ‘Facebook friend’ asking for their phone number, but the message is actually from the hacker – this is how details have been stolen from a number of Facebook users.
People have reportedly been stung by false promises of mobile phone business opportunities, while some have also seen payday loans taken out without their knowledge, using their bank details.
Police have warned Facebook users to be extra-careful. If a Facebook friend asks for your number, get in touch with them in person and not via the social media site.
