Surprised by your own area?
You can choose your mates but you can’t choose where you’re from -you know, unless you have some pre-natal psychic ability to force your parents to move – but some people might argue that they live in the middle of nowhere.
On the other hand, city dwellers might fancy a bit of solitude as an escape from the hustle and bustle of big city life.
Either way, a recent piece of research from Georgia Corr and Conrad Hackett, a senior demographer & associate director at the Pew Research Center, has illustrated the least populated areas of the UK.
In case you’re not familiar with their work, the Pew Research Center is a nonpartisan fact tank that informs the public about the issues, attitudes, and trends that are shaping the world.
Combined with a recent report from the BBC which discovered that only 5.9 per cent of the UK land is actually built on, you can clearly see the areas of the UK with the lowest population density.
It’s no surprise to see that the lowest proportion is found in Scotland, where only 2.1% of the land is built on. Hell, only the hardiest of bucks would live in the extreme North there!
Obviously, it’s worth factoring in the topography of certain areas – lakes, mountains, rivers, national trust and heritage sites etc – but the below image makes for interesting viewing.
