When it comes to competitive eating, Joey Chestnut has long been the name on everybody’s lips.
However the reigning hot dog eating champion fell short in his quest for a ninth successive victory after rival Matt Stonie ended Chestnut’s period of dominance in New York by eating a remarkable 62 hot dogs in just 10 minutes.

The contest, organised by fast food restaurant chain Nathan’s Famous, has been running for more than 40 years at the same location on Coney Island.
It turns out plenty have the stomach for the task at hand, with competitors having to make it through a qualifying event in order to take part in the grand final.
The competition has created cult figures like Chestnut and multiple world record holder Takeru Kobayashi, who holds the all-time record after eating 110 hot dogs in just 10 minutes.
Stonie will hope he can add his name to the list of all-time greats, after victory in an event that separates the best from the wurst.
