Most of us have been tempted into making reckless decisions after one too many at the pub.
A Newcastle-based business student has set a new bar for half-cut spontaneity, though, after he and his two mates decided over a game of pool that they fancied a holiday. Rather than boring themselves with planning and research, they thought they’d just go immediately.
Dexter Panashe, 20, and his friends headed straight home to pack, and jumped in a cab to Newcastle Airport, deciding – like any good students would – that they’d spend a sizeable whack of their loans on a 1,376 mile journey to Magaluf.
They left the pub at 4:00am, and by 9:30am they were on a one-way flight to Palma airport for the price of £177. When they arrived, they found a hotel with a 55 Euro triple room and checked in. So far, so good.
But just a few hours later, Dexter remembered that he had a group presentation to give at university the following day, and being the team player that he is, headed straight back off to the airport at around 6pm.
The only available flight was to Manchester, so on arrival the reformed party animal had to jump in a cab back to to the north east. That journey cost him a whopping £260, arriving in Newcastle just after 3am. He managed to grab a few hours sleep and was at his lecture for 9am.
Dexter told JOE that he’d only really had time to grab a few drinks by the pool before the realisation hit him. When asked if he considered swapping his grades for the sunshine and staying out there, he said: “I did yeah, but there was no way I was going to let my group down. They were shocked but happy I came back.”
After his presentation (which apparently went surprisingly well), Dexter decided to check the damage to his bank account, which turned out to be in the region of £700. Ouch.
But despite spending the equivalent cost of three PS4’s on what was essentially a complicated commute across Europe, he told us that it wouldn’t be the last impromptu holiday.
“Yeah I’d definitely do it again. Probably without the the expensive taxi ride though, and I’d maybe clear my schedule a bit next time.”
