Most people pick up a Rubik’s Cube once, fiddle around with it for five minutes, get frustrated and hurl it beneath the wheels of a passing bus in frustration.
There is in fact a formula for solving a Rubik’s Cube, but it takes a lot of practice and thought to actually use it. It’s tough enough to successfully solve one, but to break the world record? That’s a whole other feat.
In a recent post to Reddit, a young man going by the username stevecho816 shared a video, titled ‘I broke the Rubik’s Cube world record with 4.59 seconds!’ If you watch the video below, it seems that he does indeed break the world record, clocking a time of just 4.59 seconds.
That in itself is remarkable, and a great achievement for the young fella, so hats off to him. But it’s not the most remarkable thing about the video – it’s the way everyone reacts to the world record.

The young man, who one assumes is named Steve Cho based on his username (the 816th of the Steve Cho clan, to borrow an Adam Buxton joke), can’t believe he’s done it, slowly rising to his feet with a distant smile on his face. Bystanders lean over to see what’s going on. The red-headed kid behind the clock looks out to the rest of the crowd, as if to ask ‘You seeing this shit?’
Everyone gets to their feet, applauding. The excitement spreads round the room, as disbelief turns to unfiltered joy – there’s a record breaker in their midst! He’s done it!
This kid goes in for a high five and is gloriously denied.
One kid is so excited he can hardly contain himself. The purity, the innocence, it’s almost too much!
The disciples of the newly-anointed Rubik’s Cube Jesus flock around him. One, who we will name St Excitable, jumps up and down, yelling ‘World record! World record!’
Everyone goes in for the high five, but Rubik’s Cube Jesus only has so many high fives to dish out. Handshakes, selfies, everyone wants a piece of Rubik’s Cube Jesus.
Life has changed forever for this young man. Before, he was but a mere mortal. Now he is a god.
