Kanye West appeared on Saturday Night Live this weekend, and it was a weird as you’d expect
After Arianna Grande dropped out of appearing on the season premiere of US comedy institution SNL, Kanye West stepped up to fill in. And because this is Kanye, it was weird and controversial.
First up, he dressed as a water bottle to perform “I Love It” with Lil Pump.

He also performed new song “We Got Love” with Teyana Taylor. SNL musical guests are usually restricted to just two live performances, but in a break from tradition, he jumped back on stage with Kid Cudi and 070 Shake, and also now wearing that goddamn MAGA hat, to play “Ghost Town”.
For anyone else, that would be enough. But this is Kanye, so of course he did something else. As the show ended, he delivered a rambling, pro-Donald Trump sermon which left the New York audience confused, and received a few audible heckles.
The speech was cut from the broadcast but was filmed by former SNL star Chris Rock, who was in the audience, and posted on his Instagram Stories.

He defended his support of Donald Trump, saying “So many times I talk to a white person and [they] say, ‘How could you like Trump, he’s racist?’ Well, if I was concerned about racism I would have moved out of America a long time ago.”
“You wanna see the sunken place? Okay, Im’a listen to y’all now,” he continued, referencing the Get Out memes and jokes that have been made about him following his recent political turn. “I’ma put my superman cape on, because this means you can’t tell me what to do… You want the world to move forward? Try love.”
The reaction to the impassioned speech was mixed at best. Rock can be heard going “Oh my god” and laughing behind the camera. Guest host Adam Driver rolls his eyes. There are a handful of claps, but also some angry shouts from the audience.
This is not the only big update from Planet Kanye this weekend – the Chicago rapper was due to release his ninth studio album Yandhi (his third in four months) on September 29th, but as of Sunday morning, it is yet to appear.
He also announced in a tweet that he’s changing his name to just Ye.
More Kanye updates as and when we get them.
