Rejoice! My prayers have been answered
New André 3000? Surely this can’t be real. Am I dreaming?
Nope, I’m not dreaming. This time last week we were revelling in the new Childish Gambino song “This Is America” and this week one of music’s most reclusive stars, who hasn’t released anything in a very long time, has released two new songs as part of an EP released for Mother’s Day in America.
As part of the Look Ma No Hands EP, André 3000 has released both “Me & My (To Bury Your Parents)” and “Look Ma No Hands” via Soundcloud.
The first track, “Me & My (To Bury Your Parents)”, hears 3-Stacks charismatically singing a tribute to his late mother Sharon Benjamin Hodo, who passed away on May 28th 2013. Thinking back to his childhood, André harmonises over some somber, yet melodious keys played by Kevin Kendrick.
On the second track, “Look Ma No Hands”, we’re invited to the more eclectic side of the multi-talented artist. With James Blake on keys and André 3000 on bass clarinet the 17 minute vocal-less track serves as a jazz-inspired effort to honour his parents who have both passed away.
Does this mean that an André 3000 album is finally on the way? Or perhaps Outkast are getting back in the studio to make another album?
I really hope so.
If this new music isn’t an indication that we could be getting a new project from 3-Stacks then perhaps the fact that the often reclusive star has now joined up to Instagram is. Is this a way to gently integrate himself back into the spotlight before he hits us over the head with a new project?
Again, I really hope so.
His first post on Instagram was a picture of him and his mother (which is used for the new EP’s cover art) with the caption, “I love you mom.” He then followed it up with pictures of the handwritten lyrics to “Me & My (To Bury Your Parents)” and then screenshots of some texts to and from his mother before she passed away.
