The plot thickens
In a new interview speaking from behind bars, Death Row Records founder Suge Knight has said that Dr. Dre paid to have him killed on a couple of occasions, which led to him killing one of the hired assassins in self defence.
The “assassins” he’s referring to are Terry Carter (the deceased) and Cle “Bone” Sloan.
Sentenced today to 28 years in prison for killing Carter and injuring Sloan by running them over with his truck in January of 2015, Marion “Suge” Knight entered a plea of no contest to the charge of voluntary manslaughter in his murder trial of Carter.
Suge has always stood by the fact that there was a gun at Tam’s Burgers in Compton, California, which was where the murder took place, and that it was a set up in order to have him killed.
The restaurant’s location is close to where the N.W.A. biopic Straight Outta Compton was being filmed. It should be noted that Suge was angry about how he was portrayed in the movie and even threatened its director F. Gary Gray last year.
In the interview with The Blast, Suge claimed:
“They also got the paper trail with all the checks and proof of when they talked to the witnesses saying that Dre came to them first and asked the two guys how much it cost to get rid of me. And they said, ‘What you mean by get rid of?’ And he said, ‘Kill him.’ That’s when they start coming up with prices.”
Suge alleges that this is all a “murder-for-hire case.”
In 2016, Suge’s lawyer Thaddeus Culpepper said Dr. Dre paid a man named Dwayne “Knob” Johnson to carry out an attack on him at Tam’s Burgers and in fleeing for his life Suge “accidentally” ran over Carter.
So why would Dr. Dre want Suge Knight killed?
According to Suge, Dre signed a lifetime management deal with him that entitled the former head of Death Row Records to a 30% cut of all Dre’s future entertainment-related earnings. So if this is to be believed then that would mean Suge would receive a huge chunk of Dre’s mammoth Apple deal that saw the technology giant buy Beats Electronics for $3 billion in 2014.
In 2016, Suge sued Dre for $300 million, or 30 percent of his $1 billion take in the sale of Beats to Apple.
The second time the Death Row Records boss alleges Dr. Dre paid an assassin to kill him was in August of 2014. Suge was shot seven times while at West Hollywood nightclub 1OAK, the same night Chris Brown was hosting a VMA party.
Shot in the abdomen, chest, and left forearm, Suge survived but suffered health complications from his wounds.
