Record That Changed My Life

In the seventh episode of JOE’s Record That Changed My Life series, Tokio Myers waxes lyrical about Cross by Justice and breaks down why it’s so much more than just another dance album to him.

The self-titled album by Justice, which is also known as Cross, was released in 2007 to both commercial fanfare and love from underground fans. A project full of micro-samples, it’s often regarded an opera-disco album, a sub-genre that was brought to the masses via the release of Cross. It achieved gold status in the UK, thanks in part to the singles “D.A.N.C.E.” and “Waters of Nazareth”.

It was Grammy nominated for Best Electronic/Dance Album, while “D.A.N.C.E.” was nominated for Best Dance Recording and Best Video. Rolling Stone ranked it number 24 on their list of the 30 Greatest EDM Albums of All Time.

Tokio Myers is the Britain’s Got Talent alumni who wows audiences with his breathtaking piano playing and arsenal of skills on various other instruments. Starting out as a member of Mr. Hudson’s band The Library, he’s gone on to be a whirlwind force of his own having just released his debut album Our Generation and come off of a sold out UK tour compiled of 20 dates, including two dates in London,

Discovering Cross by Justice after a routine trip to Deal Real Records in London, Tokio Myers explains that the album by the French duo was something he had never heard before. Breaking down the instrumentation, the samples and the album’s accompanying music videos, you’ll see from watching this episode of Record That Changed My Life that Tokio Myers really knows and loves Justice’s debut album.

“It’s got a very classic feel to it…but I would say it is more Hans Zimmer-meets-Rage Against The Machine.”
