Eight people have been injured in a shooting outside a mosque, including a seven-year-old girl.
The incident happened at Arrahma mosque in Avignon as worshippers were leaving the place of worship at 10.30pm local time on Sunday evening.
The perpetrators numbered a gang of four, arriving in a Renault Clio before opening fire on the crowd. Two of the group carried out the shooting using a handgun and a shotgun, both wearing hoods, according to local newspaper reports.
Reports state four people were wounded outside the mosque and a family of four – including a seven-year-old girl – also suffered injuries from shrapnel.
According to local sources cited in the Guardian, the suspect had made “confused remarks in relation” to a string of jihadist attacks that have struck France, killing 239 people since 2015.
Police said they were not treating the incident as a terrorist attack.
