Another 15 people are in hospital

A man has died following a crash involving two trains in Wales, the British Transport Police has confirmed.

Another 15 people have been taken to hospital with injuries sustained in the low-speed collision between the trains.

The BTP said these injuries were not believed to be life-threatening or life-changing.

The crash took place near the village of Llanbrynmair, in Powys, at around 19:30 on Monday.

One of the trains had been travelling from Shrewsbury to Aberystwyth and the other from Machynlleth to Shrewsbury.

In a statement at 01:24 on Tuesday, the BTP confirmed that a man had sadly passed away following the collision.

His next of kin have been informed and are being supported by specialist officers.

Superintendent Andrew Morgan said: “We can sadly confirm a man has died following this evening’s incident. We extend our deepest sympathies to his loved ones, alongside everyone else impacted and specialist officers continue to provide support.”

“British Transport Police are working at pace, along with our colleagues in emergency services and the rail industry, to understand the circumstances leading up to this collision. Residents will see an increased policing presence in the area in the coming days as a result.”

Network Rail and Transport for Wales have urged passengers not to travel on the Cambrian railway east of Machynlleth, which will be closed while investigations are underway,

The A470, which runs adjacent to the railway and is the main road from north to south Wales, has been closed in both directions, Traffic Wales said.

In a post on X, transport secretary Louise Haigh said: “My thoughts are with those involved in the train crash near Llanbrynmair in Powys earlier tonight.

“I’d like to thank emergency services at the scene and will remain in close contact with Network Rail and the Welsh Government for further updates.”
