The pay is less than average for a painter and decorator in the UK
The Queen is currently on the lookout for a painter and decorator to work on Buckingham Palace – which is odd timing considering she’s said she’ll soon leave and never live there again.
Clearly, Her Royal Highness doesn’t want to leave her gaff looking grubby for the next tenant, so she’s offering the successful candidate a salary of up to £30,000.
The average salary for a painter and decorator in the UK is £31, 311, according to Reed. That’s over a grand more than HRH is offering for the job.
But, the royal job doesn’t sound too taxing.
“It’s adding the decorative finishes, for people to appreciate for years to come. It’s feeling inspired to deliver to the very highest standards, and it’s the pride in joining a team at the heart of a world-famous institution,” the job advert reads.
“This is what makes working for the Royal Household exceptional.”
Candidates do need some painting and decorating experience to be considered and will join a small team in charge of making Buckingham Palace look in tip-top shape.
To do this, you’ll carry out inspections and identify rooms in need of attention before making sure they are expertly renewed – working on signwriting and specialist wall coverings, as well as using specialist paint finishes such as marbling and gliding.
Solving maintenance issues is also in the job description, as is working 40 hours each week.
The newly advertised job is thought to be part of the £369 million taxpayer-funded renovation of the palace.
Over 150,000 people have signed a petition calling for the royals to pay for it themselves.
The entire renovation is due to be completed in 2027. Applicants for the painting and decorating job will want to move fast, as it closes on 3 April.
Roles as a Housekeeping Assistant, Operations Coordinator, and Building Supervisor are also being advertised by the Palace.
