At least two poachers have been mauled to death and eaten by lions on a South African game reserve

Rangers discovered the remains of two people in a lion enclosure in the Sibuya game reserve, near the town of Kenton-on-Sea. Three pairs of shoes, a high-powered rifle and an axe were also found.

Sibuya reserve owner Nick Fox said the suspected poachers entered the reserve late on Sunday night or early on Monday morning.

Speaking to AFP news agency Mr Fox said: “They strayed into a pride of lions – it’s a big pride so they didn’t have too much time.”

“We’re not sure how many there were – there’s not much left of them.”

More than 80 per cent of the world’s rhinos live in South Africa.
