Could Robin look good in rainbow print?
In recent years, representation within comic books has skyrocketed. The first official gay hero was the Spanish DC character Extraño in 1988, but he didn’t make many appearances until this year’s DC Pride series. But now, with an already flourishing LGBTQ+ canon of characters, DC has added another to its ranks. In Batman: Urban Legends #6, Robin (currently Tim Drake) comes out as bisexual.
Comic book companies Marvel and DC are constantly battling to outperform, or perhaps copy, one another. Marvel’s impressive queer roster is beginning to gain traction in the MCU, most recently with Loki’s bisexual and gender-fluid revelation.
DC comics have a similar relationship to showing its queer characters on screen. Hopefully, this is moving in the right direction thanks to TV shows like Arrow, Batwoman, and The Flash, showing characters out and proud.
The most recent DC hero to join the alphabet mafia is Tim Drake, one iteration of Batman’s favourite sidekick Robin. Drake stars in “Sum of Our Parts,” by writer Meghan Fitzmartin, artist Belén Ortega, colorist Alejandro Sánchez, and letterer Pat Brosseau. On Tuesday, the story concluded with Robin saving Bernard from being sacrificed. Afterwards, the caped hero asked Bernard on a date.
Though this is only the introduction to this character’s exploration of his sexuality, fans are eating it up:
