Note to self: Be more clumsy…
A woman in California won a $10m jackpot after a passerby accidentally bumped into her, forcing her to inadvertently press the wrong button on a scratch card machine.
According to CALottery, LaQuedra Edwards put $40 into a Lottery Scratchers vending machine located in a Vons Supermarket in Tarzana in November 2021.
However, as she was about to select which game she’d like to play, a person who Edwards has since described as “rude” bumped into her, nudging her hand into accidentally selecting the wrong number on the vending machine screen.
Turns out, it was less of an accident and more of a lucky twist of fate – as this clumsy passer-by helped Edwards come face to face with a $30 200x Scratchers ticket – and while she certainly had no intention of buying it, it did happen to feature a $10m jackpot.
Lo and behold, upon scratching this random buy, Edwards discovered that she had actually won the card’s top prize.
“He just bumped into me, didn’t say a thing, and just walked out the door,” recalls Edwards, who initially remembered being a little miffed that she’d accidentally spent the bulk of her money on one single ticket instead of her usual multi-ticket purchase.
“I didn’t really believe it at first, but I got on the 405 freeway and kept looking down at (the ticket), and I almost crashed my car,” she laughed.
“I pulled over, looked at it again and again, scanned it with my (California Lottery mobile) app, and I just kept thinking this can’t be right.
“I’m still in shock. All I remember saying once I found out how much I just won was, ‘I’m rich!’” said Edwards.
The lucky winner has since revealed that she is hoping to spend her accidental winnings on a new house and helping her start a non-profit organisation.
Turns out, this strange occurrence ended well for the convenience store too – as the Vons in Tarzana received a $50,000 bonus just for selling the ticket, according to the same press release.
