Playboy makes history with Bretman Rock as first gay male cover star

Kieran Galpin

Stunning is an understatement!

Social media icon, make-up guru and online personality Bretman Rock has made history as the first openly gay cover star of Playboy magazine.

Clad in the brand’s signature heels, black tights, a bow-tie, lingerie and bunny ears, Rock is shown in black and white posing across a simple greyscale background for an issue that’s due out later this month.

“For Playboy to have a male on the cover is a huge deal for the LGBT community, for my brown people community and it’s all so surreal,” Rock told Playboy.

Rock rose to fame in the golden age of YouTube, initially starting off with make-up tutorials. From there, he went on to appear in numerous TV shows, including his own which aired on MTV.

“A total ‘is this even f****ng happening right now?’ type of vibe. And I’m so pretty,” the social media personality continued.

GLAAD’s head of talent, Anthony Allen Ramos, praised Playboy for the inclusive cover, calling it a “powerful step forward in the ongoing movement towards greater diversity and inclusion in fashion and modeling.”

With over 17 million Instagram followers, Rock’s cover will serve as an inspiration, especially to Queer youth who consider the figure a role model.

Rock is the third male to appear on the cover of Playboy, with the first being the magazine’s founder, Hugh Hefner. Last year, Bad Bunny also made a cover appearance, which was applauded not for being a groundbreaking moment but because Bunny looked hot as hell.

“Look at new playboy cover. Bretman Rock nailed it,” said one Twitter user alongside images of the cover itself.

As with most things, a small minority seem compelled to spread online hate – however the overwhelming outpouring of praise surrounding the news proves that we’re definitely moving in the right direction.
