A quick feel in the shower can be life-saving
You may or may not have testicles. If you do, make sure you keep reading. If you don’t, make sure you keep reading, because what you read and watch here may end up being rather useful for someone that does.
Testicular cancer is the most common cancer among young men, but two-thirds of 18-34-year-old men in the UK don’t know they’re in the age group most at risk of a diagnosis.
It’s one thing telling men what to do and a whole other thing to tell them how to do it. But when over 40 per cent of men in the at-risk age group say they don’t how to check their nuts, someone has to try.
That’s why this April, for Testicular Cancer Awareness Month, Movember is encouraging men to get to know their nuts by giving them a regular check in the shower. Why the shower? Because your nuts are warmer, hang lower and are easily accessible.
Once they’re nice and steamy, roll one nut between your thumb and fingers, with your hands in roughly the same shape they’re in when you’re holding a sandwich.
Obviously, repeat this on your other testicle. They should feel smooth and firm.
Watch Movember’s step-by-step guide to see exactly how to do it.
Give your nuts a feel every month or so. What you should be looking out for is this:
A change in shape or size
A lump that wasn’t there before
A pain when you touch them (it’s normal for nuts to feel sensitive, but not painful)
No need to freak out if you do find any of these, but it’s imperative that you do the right thing and go and get them checked. Early detection is hugely important in cases of testicular cancer, and if nothing else, it’s better to be safe than sorry.
So there you have it. You are now briefed on how to check your nuts. Now before you hop in the shower and carry out what you’ve learned, please share this as far and wide as you can. It could be incredibly important to someone you know.
