Spare a thought for poor, poor Alan Davies from Birmingham. We don’t know the man, but having heard how agonisingly close he came to earning himself a life-changing wedge of money on Wednesday, we can’t help but feel for the guy… whoever he is.
With mere seconds remaining of Chelsea’s Champions League game against Atletico Madrid on Wednesday night, he was on course to win £250,000 – only for it to be cruelly snatched away from him at the very death.
Having correctly predicted five other scores as part of Sky’s Super Six, all he needed was for Chelsea to keep their 1-0 lead over Diego Simeone’s men.
Alas, it wasn’t to be.
Deep into stoppage time, with the tie effectively over with Thomas Tuchel’s side holding a 2-0 aggregate lead, Chelsea sprung a late counter-attack.
The ball was rolled into the path of substitute Emerson on the edge of the Atleti area, who drilled a low shot into the far corner of Jan Oblak’s goal.
All those in the Sky Sports studio were fully aware of the implications of the goal for Alan, with Tim Sherwood putting his head in his hands as he provided commentary.
