May he rest in peace.
The people of Northern Ireland were celebrating an historic victory on Thursday night, as their heroic boys in green overcame Ukraine 2-0 in Lyon. It was a long time coming too, as they had waited 34 long years for an international tournament win. In fact it was their first ever at the Euros.
But tragically, the result has been somewhat overshadowed by the tragic news that one of their supporters has passed away in France. A man in his sixties collapsed and then later died watching the game at the Stade de Lyon. Northern Ireland spokesman Neil Brittain confirmed the sad news.
In a horrible coincidence, he is the second Northern Ireland supporter to die during the first week of the tournament. On Sunday, 24-year-old Darren Rodgers passed away after a fall in Nice, following the side’s game to Group C rivals Poland.
The team wore black armbands against Ukraine to mark Rodgers’ passing.
