Patel claimed all ten of India’s wickets in Mumbai, the city of his birth

New Zealand’s Ajaz Patel made cricketing history on Saturday by becoming just the third bowler ever to claim all 10 wickets in a single Test innings.

Patel took all four of India’s wickets on day one of the second Test in Mumbai, the city of his birth, on Friday, before claiming the remaining six on Saturday.

India were bowled out for 325, with the left-arm spinner posting figures of 10-119. Two of his wickets were clean bowled, three were lbw and the remaining five were catches.

Patel received an ovation from India’s players and the majority of those in the stands at the Wankhede Stadium as he left the field.

Anil Kumble, the last man to achieve the feat when playing for India against Pakistan back in 1999, was quick to offer his congratulations to Patel on his Twitter page.

The only other man to claim all ten wickets in a Test innings was England off-spinner Jim Laker against Australia at Old Trafford in 1956.

“It is pretty surreal. I don’t think you ever really believe that you are going to achieve something like that, so to do it is pretty special. I am in illustrious company,” Patel said later.

“I think I am very fortunate. The stars have aligned for me to have an occasion like that here in Mumbai, the place I was born. It was quite a special occasion for me and my family.

“It was about finding good rhythm and being repetitive, asking good questions of the batters.”
