A bad week for Arsenal became worse on Wednesday night as they followed defeat to Manchester United by losing 2-1 to Swansea City.
The two results have seriously damaged their hopes of winning their first league title since 2004 and follow the disappointing 2-0 first leg defeat to Barcelona in the Champions League.
Alexis Sanchez, so often Arsenal’s star man, has also questioned his teammates in an interview with DirecTV Sports.
“If we go out on to the pitch with hunger to become champions, to win the Premier League or the Champions League we can achieve it, to win big things,” Sanchez said.
“There are great players. I train with them daily and they have got the mentality and the desire to win but we lack hunger, the mentality that we are winning 1-0 when we go out on to the pitch. Sometimes we lack this hunger to believe that we can be champions – to go out on to the pitch feeling that we are winning 1-0. The other team doesn’t always win because it is superior. It is rather little details.”
Interestingly, Sanchez delivered his blunt assessment before Arsenal’s trip to Old Trafford, but the interview was only broadcast on Wednesday.
With Arsene Wenger trying to pick his players up after a disappointing sequence of results, such comments from one of his key players are unlikely to help matters.
