Arsene Wenger is currently in Liberia after receiving an invitation by President George Weah
Arsene Wenger was invited to Liberia by the country’s president George Weah, the former world class striker who played for the likes of AC Milan, AS Monaco and Paris Saint-Germain during a glittering career.
Weah was signed by Wenger in 1988, and he would go on to become one the greatest players to ever play the game in the process.
Wenger was invited by Weah to his presidential inauguration earlier in the year, as he sworn in in the country’s democratic transition in 74 years, but the Frenchman was unable to attend due to obligations with his former club Arsenal.
As he arrived in the country’s capital this week, the affection for Wenger was clear to see. Thousands lined the streets in anticipation for his presence, and after landing he was introduced to a baby boy, who was named “Arsene Wenger” after the Arsenal legend.
Wenger is in Liberia to receive the country’s highest honour, the title of Knight Grand Commander of the Humane Order of African Redemption, recognition for his “contribution to sports in Africa” and consistent work in giving “many Africans opportunities”.
